ATROSTIM
Phrenic Nerve Stimulator V2.0Phrenic nerve stimulators (PNS) are used to stimulate the phrenic nerves of patients to maintain artificial respiration. The most common patient groups who benefit from the use of PNS are patients suffering from Respiratory Muscle Paralysis, RMP or Central Alveolar Hypoventilation, CAH. The use of PNS requires normal function of phrenic nerves and diaphragm muscle.
RMP is a condition where the connection between the respiratory centre and the phrenic nerve cell bodies in the cervical spinal cord is lost. The typical case of lost connection between respiratory centre and peripheral nerve is a high level spinal fracture in the neck due to an accident (traffic, diving, sports, etc.).
CAH is a rare condition where the respiratory centre is malfunctioning. Most cases of malfunction of the respiratory centre are cases of central sleep apnoea, a rare condition of which the most cases are inborn.
The evolution of the device started in middle 80s and the first versions of Atrostim PNS were designed at the end of 80s.
The
current version of Atrostim PNS (V2.0) is CE marked. CE-marking is based on
the EC certificate issued by TÜV Product Service GmbH, Munich, Germany
(Notified body No. 0123).
